In un piccolo villaggio irlandese, il giovane Redmond Barry, figlio unico di madre vedova, scapestrato e di bell'aspetto ma con pochi soldi in tasca, s'innamora della cugina, la bella e frivola Nora Brady. Nel villaggio, qualche settimana più tardi, si ferma un reggimento militare del Regno Unito, che sta reclutando truppe per la guerra dei sette anni. Durante la sosta Nora conosce uno degli uomini di stanza, il capitano John Quin, con cui avvia una relazione.
