At the end of each Antarctic summer, the emperor penguins of the South Pole journey to their traditional breeding grounds in a fascinating mating ritual that is captured in this documentary by intrepid filmmaker Luc Jacquet. The journey across frozen tundra proves to be the simplest part of the ritual, as after the egg is hatched, the female must delicately transfer it to the male and make her way back to the distant sea to nourish herself and bring back food to her newborn chick.

Plot

An Emperor Penguin, having snatched the egg that contained his son and then kept the child warm from birth until he reached a remarkable size, must teach him to become adult and start him towards the journey towards the Antarctic Sea where the Chick will have to learn to swim and get food like any other member of the herd. This process of initiation is not devoid of any dangers, from snow storms to creeps to predators, but daddy penguin does not stop at nothing and junior delivery to the fate for which he was put into the world.
