Nell'estate del 1952 Mario Ruoppolo, un disoccupato figlio di pescatori, vive su un'isola del sud Italia che da poco tempo ha dato asilo politico al grande poeta cileno Pablo Neruda. E proprio in occasione di ciò, Mario viene assunto in qualità di postino con l'unico compito di consegnare la posta al poeta, dato che tutto il resto della popolazione è analfabeta e quindi fino ad allora non c'era stato bisogno di postini.
