Note : It's hard to say something that hasn't already been said about this film, but here goes, Sam Raimi's sequel/remake/self-parody of his first Evil Dead film is a masterpiece of gore, probably the best horror comedy ever made, and it still holds up more than 30 years later. Whether it's Bruce Campbell's pitch-perfect performance as heroic idiot Ash, the extremely copious amounts of gore, or the funny but still kind of scary and grotesque practical effects, it just clicks together. It's obviously not as terrifying as the original (which I still think has some extremely effective sequences), but it makes up for it in breakneck pacing, old-fashioned slapstick comic timing, and sheer audacity. If you haven't seen this, what are you doing with your life?
Ash Williams takes his girlfriend Linda to a secluded cabin in the woods, where they find an old book, the Necronomicon Ex Mortis, and a tape recording left behind by an archaeologist who found the book during a dig. Playing back the tape, which features the archaeologist reciting incantations from the book, releases demonic forces which possess Linda, and Ash is forced to kill her with a shovel. He's briefly possessed by the demon himself, but returns to normal, and finally brings and end to deadite Linda by destroying her head with a chainsaw, before severing his own demon-possessed hand. However, the archaeologist's daughter Annie and her fellow researcher head to the cabin with missing pages from the book, and discovering Ash covered in blood, they think he's a murderer and lock him in the cellar before listening to the rest of the tape, which quite literally makes all hell break loose. Now, only Ash, his shotgun, and his chainsaw attached to his arm stump can stop the forces of evil.
This remaster is not great, but it's good enough, slightly grainy and with somewhat clipped blacks, but otherwise decent color, contrast, and definition. Some shots with optical effects are somewhat lower quality, but it's not overly distracting. 5.1 remaster sounds good, commentary track is fun, as can be expected.
