Note : Robert Zemeckis has always done weird and original crowd pleasers, at least before his infatuation with motion capture and full CGI films, and this is one of the weirdest, a blacker than black body horror comedy about aging and death which was, I suppose, the The Substance of the 90s? The cast is fully stacked, with Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, Bruce Willis playing delightfully against type, and Isabella Rossellini.
Aging actress Madeline Ashton invites her frenemy, writer Helen Sharp, backstage at her Broadway show along with Sharp's fiancé Ernest Menville, who's a famous plastic surgeon. Ernest is smitten with Madeline, and breaks of his engagement to Helen. Seven years later, Helen is obsessed with getting revenge, and is committed to a mental hospital. After another seven years, Madeline and Ernest live in Beverly Hills, but both are miserable, Madeline about her age, and Ernest having become an alcoholic working as a reconstructive mortician. Madeline receives an invitation to a party hosted by Helen, and desperately seeks treatments to look younger, which leads to her being given a mysterious business card of a woman, Lisle, who specializes in rejuvenation. At the party, Helen is glamorous and younger looking, and a jealous Madeline visits Lisle, who promises her eternal youth with a potion. However, things are about to get a little more complicated...
A very good 4k remaster here, color and contrast is excellent, detail is nice, although the grain is perhaps slightly more reduced than what would be ideal. Both the 5.1 and stereo tracks sounds good, too bad there are no commentaries.
